UNIT 1 BIOLOGY - LAB GUIDES AND RESOURCES
Listed below are the Topics and suggested practical activities from the syllabus
1. Food tests - Carrying out tests for reducing and non-reducing sugars, starch, lipids and proteins in pure form and unknown.
2. Food tests - Investigate and compare quantitatively reducing sugars and starch – Make serial dilutions of glucose, etc 3. Micrographs - Electron micrograph – label membrane systems and organelles 4. Microscope - Introduction to the microscope and calibrating the stage micrometer; calculating magnification of cells 5. Cells - drawing of typical animal and plant cells as seen under the light microscope 6. Cells - Review tissues found in plants. Plan drawing of a dicot root in T.S/ dicot leaf in T.S. 7. Osmosis - Investigate the effect on plant cells of immersion into solutions of different water potentials – potato water potential 8. Osmosis - Estimate solute potential of onion epidermal cells (plasmolysis, making slides) 9. Enzyme - Investigate the effect of temperature on enzyme action – starch + amylase 10. Enzyme - Investigate the effect of substrate concentration on enzyme action – H2O2 + catalase. 11. Enzyme - Investigate the effect of inhibitors on the rate of enzyme activity. 12. Mitosis - Observe mitosis in prepared slides of onion root tips 13. Mitosis - Making root tip squashes 14. Meiosis - Construct models using embroidery thread or pipe cleaners 15. Meiosis - Draw slides of anthers (pollen grains undergoing meiosis) 16. Inheritance - genetic determination using corn mix/ beads mix 17. Sexual reproduction in plants - Plan diagram of an anther 18. Sexual reproduction in plants - examine floral structures to clarify the varying pollination methods in grass, etc. 19. Sexual reproduction in man - Microscopic structure of testis - Plan drawing of tissues. 20. Sexual reproduction in man - Microscopic structure of ovary - Plan drawing of tissues. |
